Half Day Tours (5-7 hours based on water levels)
Suspension Bridge Tour(26 km) – guided kayak or canoe tour starting from the Red Deer River Adventure main site and ending at the hamlet of East Coulee. This very popular run passes downtown Drumheller but is sheltered from it by large cottonwoods. As we launch you will see the famous World’s Largest Dinosaur near downtown. An island coincides with the Drumheller Town limit and then the railway track and thick brush buffer the river from civilization so it feels more remote than it really is.
The badlands are quite spectacular in this area and important fossil finds have been made here. After a while you pass the Rosedale Bridge and the small hamlet of Rosedale. Around the bend you encounter the mouth of the Rosebud River and there is a bit of a riffle that provides some excitement. A short time later you pass under the Star Mine Suspension Bridge. This popular tourist attraction allowed miners to access the Star Mine across the river. The original bridge was destroyed by a landslide and was rebuilt in 1958 to honour mining heritage. After passing Cambria the area becomes less populated and the badlands views are spectacular. We pass old coal mining towns like Rosedale, Cambria, Lehigh and East Coulee. On the left we pass the famous Willow Creek Hoodoos in the distance. Near the end of our trip we see the Atlas Coal Mine Historic Site where we will see the Atlas tipple, the largest surviving structure of its type.
